Through our guided reading and Monthly Book Clubs, we are trying to promote a love of reading but also, a love of reading about other faiths, cultures and experiences that might be different to our own.
We want children to have access to different fiction and non-fiction texts that teach them about the wider world and experiences of other people. We want children to reflect and celebrate everyone’s uniqueness and differing experiences.
Black History Month 2024
This year, all children will be exploring the writing of Floella Benjamin who grew up in Trinidad and moved to London as part of the Windrush Generation.
To bring the story alive, we invited Graham - a local saxophone player - in to school to perform for the children. The saxophone is referenced in the story and this performance really helps children to be immersed in the text.
A Prayer for Black History Month
Compassionate God,
who sent Jesus Christ to deliver us from all manner of injustices and inequalities,
create in us new hearts and enlarged visions,
to see the image of God in every person
irrespective of background, race and ethnicity.
May we be generous in our love of others
as we work towards ending racism and injustice;
creating communities of human flourishing,
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
We have focused on black artists from around the world and looked at and celebrated their influence.
Year 6 were inspired by the culture, people and wildlife of the Caribbean.
Year 5 looked at the Windrush ship
We are developing our library to promote more books from different cultures and to celebrate all that makes us special.
We did an Amazon Wish List and are very thankful to parents/carers who donated books from our list.
